Ano’s Public Probe gives you the Nation – A history – Narrated by JCC (Part 2)
We start off where we left off here, and basically put a bow on the nations time in Monticello in this part of the probe. This one is probably going to be the shortest part, mainly because it contains the leftovers from our first sitdown and we havnt done the second one yet. If you guys have anything you want aired from this section of the Nations history nows the time to ask because we are going to be going onwards and forwards in the next part.
You mean that the place that had started as a place where no morals were enforced had formed its own set of “anti morals”?
In a way, yes
Can you explain that a bit more? As in what kind of thing would you be flamed for back then?
Anything against the “rules” that had been set up for what good people do, be, etc. I even did it to you once, about sleeping around.
Did you? I dont remember that, but it sounds about right you prick
Haha, oh yeah. Because on the Morphorums, casual sex was frowned on then, for some reason. It was regrettable, but I figured I’d come up with an example that I did, because it shows how easy it was to be caught up in the “culture” that was being created. Alot of shit was done as a result, and alot of it I regret, because of friends that were lost for what really amounts to no reason when you really think about it. People I’d probably still be close with today, and who’d probably still be around the site today, had we not been such pricks.
Its pretty ironic isnt it, considering the phorums were started to be a place where anything goes
You could say that, yeah. Problem is, we’ve tried to go back to that, but like I said earlier, there’s still that reputation that’s hard to get people to drop.
Would you put down a lot of that morality stuff to the fact that we were attached to an anti pedo site, and thus a lot of strong minded people pretty set on their views on whats black and whats white?
Honestly, not really. The anti-pedo thing IS a black and white issue. Fucking kids is self-evidently wrong, and that’s just that. I think it more had to do with what the people in charge were going through personally, those being Jim and myself as well as Xavier, and how people tended to follow suit. Even if you asked Xavier yourself, he’d probably tell you he takes a “hard line stance” on most issues. And I myself am the one who came up with the idea for the Bitch Fest, which at that time was meant to elicit infighting, Jerry Springer-style. Now it’s become something different, which is the only reason it still exists.
All that drama did create a lot of entertainment though, which is why it was fanned id suspect
Yeah. I chalk that up to the fact that it was, like you said, fun in the short term. The long term implications for the site, as far as being fun for everyone to be around, and gaining new members, and keeping the existing ones, were sort of thrown by the wayside.
The peak of that bitchfest era was when a script was introduced, and someone (i think xavier) started a thread – and everyone who read it thought it was about them that thread went for ages before people figured out what was going on
Hahaha, I do remember that. That bit was actually fun, because it was a prank more than anything else. Nobody was targeted for ridicule, everyone was seeing the same thing.
Yeap. So to wrap this part of morphine history up, what was that fight between Jim and Xavier about? The same sort of things we’ve been discussing?
I was actually on hiatus during that time, so I didn’t see most of it, and don’t really remember what little I did see. I just remember that shortly after Jim IM’d me, and asked me, if he were to start up a new, independent Nation, if I was in.
What were the steps that led upto that happening?
You mean up to the physical launching of the new site?
Yeah, as to who had what input etc
Well, Fat DJ had the morphinenation.com domain at the time, since he had been the one to register it way back when we first gave it up to Jim. And apparently he was having trouble getting the loginfo to transfer it over to us in name. So in the meantime, we registered morphinenation.net as a placeholder, bought a server account with TCH, and got things set up. We downloaded the site, as it was at the time, and reuploaded it so we wouldn’t lose any pages, images, or whatever. Then there was an issue with the old script, which had been the one Phoebus put together for us back when we were still on SP.net, so we had to figure out something to do for a new script instead of using that one. Then eventually I found the login for the domain in my old IM logs, and was able to secure the morphinenation.com domain as well. So for awhile we ran both .com and .net until the .net registration ran out.
At this time the main page was running on the same format as before?
Slightly different. When we had Squid code our new script, he also made some tweaks to the site design. Some of our features would’ve been difficult to use with the new script, and certain… inaccuracies that had been spread around prevented us from asking for help making things tie together like they may have otherwise.
Squid?
Squidious. He posts on the Phorums to this day, and is the one that recoded our script, post-split. He still helps me with various technical issues from time to time.

Again informative! I enjoy understanding the history here. Thanks to Squidious for coding too, that’s a pretty cool “submission”
And then…
I think Jim and Xavier’s final blowout was a big fight about long distance/internet romances. It was ugly. Which was sad. I can’t go into detail, because I don’t remember enough of the story clearly enough to tell it fairly.
Trudes take a chill pill we’re going through this at the same speed people ur age hit on the highway.
Honey, thats interesting. Was it about someone in particular or the subject in general? Either way, there definitely will be questions about internet relationships. See folks, you too can affect the direction of the probe!
Aww crap I teleported into a zing-fest soap opera… and it’s some crazy shit. Are we to expect another article and/or so on? This is core MN/PW philosophy. Educate the children! Ha ha!
I love these.
I remember those days so fondly. I still adore watching two(or more) intelligent, well written people arguing over the internet. It’s hard to find now.
I will NEVER forget the thread with that crazy chick that said, “I no I no make no since”. It went on forEVER.
But yeah, the end of that incarnation of the Nation was rough.
I was in Canada getting the worst flu of my life when the Nation moved. It was traumatic all around. But feather is right, it’s really something amazing to watch two such eloquent people argue in public. On the other hand, it’s really really hard for me to see two people I like, and respect in general, fighting with each other, so that made the whole thing really hard for me to “enjoy.”
Thanks for the mention JCC
